Course
Pro-forma
Bachelor of Engineering (Materials)
Code
KMEB2110
Title
Fundamentals of Ceramics
Pre-requisite
None
Student Learning Time (SLT)
120 hours
Credit
3
Learning Outcomes
1.
Describe bonding and structure of oxide and non-oxide
ceramics and glasses.
2.
Relate properties of ceramics to their structure.
3.
Apply phase rules and phase diagrams to composition
calculations.
Synopsis
This course deals with bonding, structure and the physical and
chemical properties that are influenced mostly by the type of
bonding rather than the microstructure, such as defect structure
and the atomic and electron transport in ceramics. There will be
some limited coverage of properties that are dependent on
microstructure, such as fracture toughness, optical, magnetic and
dielectric properties
Assessment
40 % Continuous Assessments
60 % Final Examination
