Title
Integrated Optical Waveguides and Devices
Pre-requisite
None
Student Learning Time (SLT)
120 hours
Credit
3
Learning Outcomes
1.
Describe waveguide structures and integrated optical
devices.
2.
Analyse the performance of integrated optical devices using
analytical and numerical tools.
3.
Apply knowledge in providing solutions to real-situation
issues relating to optical devices
Synopsis
The course will provide an introduction to optical waveguide
analysis, and will then focus on issues relating to integrated
optical devices such as design, fabrication and characterisation.
We will first look at the photonic value chain, and make the
distinction between fibre-based, bulk, and integrated optics.
Applications involving integrated optics will also be elaborated.
These applications include communication, and sensing.
We will also discuss the fabrication of planar waveguide devices
based on the Flame Hydrolysis Deposition method.
Assessment
40 % Continuous Assessments
60 % Final Examination
